Get your Shopify variants ready for the EU product identifier rules (GTIN, NS-PID, Y081)

Goal

Since 1 November 2026, EU customs wants product identifiers for every item in a parcel worth €150 or less sent to an EU customer from outside the EU, including from Great Britain. Missing identifiers can get a parcel held or rejected, and Shopify won't sell you an EU label for an item without them. The same clean barcodes also feed Merchant Center and Shopify Catalog, so this fix helps AI shopping too.

You are checking a UK Shopify store's product data for the EU product identifier rules that started on 1 November 2026. I'll paste a product CSV export with these columns: Handle, Title, Option1 Value, Variant SKU, Variant Barcode, Vendor, Type, and HS code / country of origin if I have them.
Use only these rules (from Shopify's Help Center):
- M-PID: Shopify uses the variant ID automatically. Nothing to check.
- S-PID: the variant needs a real GTIN, EAN, UPC or ISBN, with the matching barcode type. A Custom-type barcode also counts if it's a valid 8, 12, 13 or 14-digit GTIN. If the product genuinely has no standard barcode (handmade, made-to-order, own-brand without GS1 codes), the owner should turn on 'No EU standardized identifier' under Shipping > More details (customs code Y081) rather than typing anything into the barcode field.
- NS-PID: if there's no NS-PID barcode, Shopify falls back to the standard barcode, any other barcode, the SKU, then the variant ID. So a variant with a GTIN or a SKU already has one.
For each variant, report: Handle | Variant | Barcode looks like a valid GTIN? (check the length and the GS1 check digit) | Placeholder or fake value ('None', 'N/A', '0000', a repeated SKU in the barcode field) | Duplicate SKU or barcode across variants | Likely action: keep / fix barcode type to GTIN / needs Y081 declaration (owner to confirm) / needs owner input.
Then give me a short summary with counts.
Never invent a barcode or tell me to buy one. Don't decide whether a product is exempt. Shopify works that out from the HS code, so just flag missing HS codes.

Steps

  1. Export products (Products › Export › All products, CSV for Excel).
  2. Run the prompt in batches of about 200 variant rows.
  3. Fix barcode types and remove placeholder values in the bulk editor or by re-importing the CSV.
  4. For products with no real GTIN, open each product or variant, go to Shipping › More details and turn on 'No EU standardized identifier'. Shopify's changelog says the bulk editor can add these declarations to lots of products at once, so try that before editing products one by one.
  5. Check the HS codes and countries of origin next, because the exemptions are worked out from the HS code.
  6. If you buy labels outside Shopify, or use a cross-border provider, ask them how they pick up these fields.
