Fill the product data gaps AI shopping tools trip over
Goal
AI assistants and Google AI Mode answer questions like "framed A3 print, oak frame, delivered to Belfast by Friday". They can only match you if sizes, materials, GTINs and options are actually in your data, not just in photos.
Prompt to copy
You are a Shopify catalogue data auditor preparing a UK store for AI shopping assistants (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot). Below is my product CSV export (Handle, Title, Body (HTML), Vendor, Type, Tags, Option names/values, Variant SKU, Variant Barcode, Variant Grams, Image count). For every product, check for: 1) Missing GTIN/barcode. If the product is custom or made-to-order, mark it 'no GTIN expected — set identifier_exists = no in the feed' instead of flagging it. 2) Missing or vague size information (exact dimensions in cm, plus inches if useful). 3) Missing materials (e.g. canvas weight, paper type, frame wood, finish). 4) Missing colour, style or theme attributes that a shopper would ask for. 5) Options that are named inconsistently (e.g. 'Size' vs 'Dimensions'). 6) Product type empty, or tags empty. Return a table: Handle | Missing fields | Suggested values ONLY if they appear elsewhere in the data (otherwise 'needs owner input') | Priority (high if best seller or many variants). Never invent dimensions, materials or barcodes.
Steps
- Export products (Products › Export › All products, CSV for Excel).
- Add a column with your 20 best sellers marked, so the AI can prioritise.
- Run the prompt in batches of about 100 products.
- Fill 'needs owner input' gaps from supplier sheets, not from the AI.
- Put attributes into Shopify's category metafields (Products › Category › attributes) as well as the description, so they reach Shopify Catalog and Merchant Center.
What to check
- No made-up GTINs. A fake barcode is worse than none and can get items disapproved.
- Custom or personalised items are marked identifier_exists = no rather than flagged as errors.
- Measurements use one consistent unit system across the catalogue.

Set up Google Merchant Center free listings for a UK Shopify store
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Merchant Center product data. Free listings cost nothing and are the biggest single AI-visibility lever for UK stores.
Track ChatGPT and AI assistant visits in GA4 and Shopify
Most ChatGPT traffic arrives with no referrer and lands in 'Direct'. A 1,000+ store study found 81.8% of it did. Set up a view that catches what can be caught, so you can see whether AI visibility work is paying off.
Build product FAQs from your customer reviews
Reviews are full of the real questions people have ("is it ready to hang?", "how true are the colours?"). Turning them into clear FAQ answers gives AI assistants and shoppers quotable, specific facts.
